Korean American violist Caroline M. Johnston

Performing viola and cello selections from Danzi, Beethoven, Clarke, Hindemith and Piston, violinist Caroline Johnston  wow’s our holiday audience. Johnston, a Korean American adoptee, toured Korea as a young adult to widespread media acclaim. She has performed since across Asia, Europe and the United States, from Victoria Hall to Carnegie Hall, Alice Tulley, Kitara, and Symphony Hall Boston. Cellist Hamilton Berry, who has taught and performed from Sao Paolo’s favelas to Carnegie Hall, accompanies Johnston.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Korean American violist Caroline M. Johnston has performed internationally in Asia, Europe  and throughout the United States, concertizing in prestigious venues such as Victoria Hall, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Kitara Hall and Symphony Hall Boston. This season, Ms. Johnston presented recitals in Paris at the American Church of Paris and the Centre Culturel Coréen with upcoming engagements with Sejong Soloists in Europe and chamber music concerts in New York. Passionate about audience engagement and broadening the reach of classical music worldwide, Ms. Johnston strives to increase accessibility through thematic and innovative programming and the incorporation of spoken presentations into performances.

Recital appearances have included performances at Sapporo's Okui Migaku Gallery, Kumho Art Hall Seoul, WMP Concert Hall, 180 Maiden Lane, First Night Boston, The Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory of Music and a solo concerto appearance with the National Repertory Orchestra. Equally active in chamber music, Ms. Johnston has appeared as a member of numerous chamber ensembles in New York, Boston, Geneva, Sapporo, Seoul and at the Taos and Thy music festivals. Ms. Johnston has performed as a participant of the Académie Pablo Casals Prades, Académie de Musique Tibor Varga Sion, Kuhmo Music Festival Finland and the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar.

Ms. Johnston has served as Principal Viola of the Young Hokkaido Chamber Players, Spoleto USA Festival Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra and Symphony, Orchestre du Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra, performing with conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, James Conlon, Carlos Kalmar and Jahja Ling. Adopted from Pusan, South Korea at the age of ten months, Ms. Johnston grew up in Acton, Massachusetts. Also known as Hong, Yoo Jin, Ms. Johnston has been active in Korean Adoptee 4 organizations in the United States and Europe. She has performed on behalf of Holt International Children’s Services at the 2011 International Forum and Gala in Washington D.C. and the International Korean Adoptee Associations at the IKAA Gathering 2007 in Seoul. In 2004, Ms. Johnston embarked upon a concert tour of South Korea in search of her biological family that was followed closely by the Korean media. Some of her most poignant memorable performances in South Korea took place at her former orphanage in Pusan, where Ms. Johnston had the opportunity to connect with and speak to the children living at the orphanage. She has served on the Board of Directors of the New York nonprofit organization Also-Known-As, Inc., where she founded and directed the Teen Mentorship Program. Ms. Johnston began violin studies at four years of age with Betty Haag and Susan Turcotte

Gavriel and viola studies at age fourteen with Michael Zaretsky at the New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division. Ms. Johnston has also studied with Nobuko Imai at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève in Switzerland and Pierre Henri Xuereb at the École Normale de Musique in Paris, France where she was awarded the Diplôme Supérieur d'Exécution by the unanimity of the jury. Ms. Johnston holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School where she was a student of Samuel Rhodes.
